Hesperidium

Hesperidium is the fruit of a citrus tree. The raw material for these installations is dried citrus peels that include oranges, clementines, blood oranges, grapefruit, pomelo, lemon, and tangerines.

The process is a practice in mindfulness. Peeling the orange in this way is meditative, it pulls me into the present moment, focusing on slicing the orange in an even line with my nail, allowing my mind to rest in this focused attention. Separating the rind from the fruit reminds me of working in clay, it has a memory, and dries oddly where it is pushed or pulled too hard. Eating the fruit is a sensory experience of tasting the sweetness, smelling the citrus, separating the fruit segments with my hands and feeling the juice run down my fingers.

By bringing multiple pieces of citrus peels together, the installation impacts a space in a meaningful way, causing the viewer to pause and consider, trying to figure out what these objects are. Patterns emerge and unfold, each installation is different, inspired by the space and the client.

You can read more about the concept and process in my studio notes.

I began creating the elements for the installations in 2009, but since these are raw natural materials I waited nearly 8 years before taking on a commission to install these in a space other than my own so I could test the integrity and longevity of the citrus peels.

Hesperidium installations are currently in Maine, North Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and Virginia, in both residential and commercial spaces.

If you are interested in working with me to design an installation for your space, please contact me or fill out the form below. This is truly one of my favorite things to do and I love how this work influences a space so dramatically.

Commission Inquiry

I aim to be as clear and transparent about the commission process as possible. We would begin by chatting so I can learn about you and gain personalized design inspiration. We would take a look at images of your space and discuss ideas. From there I would create a few mock-up designs, and once you chose the final design we would plan a time for me to come do the install in your space. The investment is dependent upon the size and scope of the project, and the installation time is built into the cost. A 50% commission deposit is required before the creative process begins, and final payment is due at the time of the installation. I look forward to working with you!
